Ten Reasons to Visit the Botanical Garden This Summer

1. The Outdoor Exhibition Is at Its Most Beautiful Bloom

It is not difficult to tell visitors why they should come to the botanical garden in summer. The outdoor exhibition is in full bloom. At this time of year, a wide range of plants is flowering – from ornamental woody plants and annuals to perennials. And although Saint Medard on June 8 threatens forty days of rain, he can do nothing against the beauty of the flowers. Various perennials gradually come into bloom – orange-yellow coneflowers, pink-flowering echinaceas, and snapdragons with their unusually shaped flowers. The rock gardens are in full bloom, scented with wild thyme and brightened by the blossoms of pinks. Daylilies, meanwhile, are a symbol of the beginning of the summer holidays, and their flowers are even edible.

2. Herbs Have Their Greatest Power

For collectors of medicinal plants, an important moment arrives in June that should not be missed. It is the Night of Saint John, celebrated on the eve of the feast of John the Baptist. It is inseparably linked with the celebrations of the summer solstice. It was believed that herbs gathered on Saint John’s Night possessed magical powers and that their healing strength was at its peak during this time. During your visit to our botanical garden, you should therefore not miss our exhibition dedicated to useful and medicinal plants. An important element of Saint John’s celebrations was a bouquet that usually contained nine herbs, many of which can also be found in our botanical garden. Saint John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) contains more than 150 active compounds and has been used in the treatment of insomnia and stress. Wormwood is known as Saint John’s herb and is used for loss of appetite, intestinal colic, and gallbladder disorders. Did you know that it is added to many bitter or semi-bitter alcoholic beverages such as Absinthe liqueur and Vermouth wine?

3. Enjoy Your Holiday

On a hot day, we recommend a walk through the Mediterranean exhibition. The aromatic essential oils released by lavender, rosemary, and other members of the mint family will transport you, at least in your imagination, to southern Europe. Such a balm for the soul is certainly worth experiencing.

4. Take Photos and Share Your Memories

Bring your camera with you, look for unique moments in our garden, and preserve them as a memory of your journey around the world in Teplice. Feel free to share them on social media; simply tag us in your photograph so that we can see how your visit to the garden turned out. If you would like to learn more about botany or horticulture, make use of our information system located throughout the entire garden. Through it, we try to introduce you to the most interesting plants and areas that are worth noticing.

5. Entertain Children with the Geofun Game

Download the fun Geofun game to your mobile phone or tablet and let children discover fascinating facts about plants in the outdoor exhibition. As a reward, they can enjoy an ice cream at the Confectionery by the Botanist.

6. Enjoy the Animals in the Garden

Plants cannot exist without animals, and vice versa. Take children to the herb garden and watch the budgerigars together, birds that originate as far away as Australia. Much closer to us are some representatives of terrestrial tortoises, which come from popular holiday destinations in southern Europe.

7. Admire Our Native Fauna

Did you know that you do not have to visit the botanical garden only for plants, but also for our insects? The colourful flowers, full of pollen and nectar, attract all kinds of pollinators. Especially on sunny days, the garden is buzzing with butterflies, bees, bumblebees, and many other insects. Bring an insect field guide with you and observe this miniature world all around you.

8. Escape the Heat

In our small arboretum, the trees provide plenty of shade for your relaxation and leisure time. In addition, you can learn interesting facts about both common and lesser-known woody plants.

9. The Greenhouse Is Blooming Too

There is also plenty to admire in the greenhouse exhibition during the summer months. Whether it is flowering botanical species of hibiscus, fascinating succulent plants from Madagascar, or tropical aroids. Thanks to efficient ventilation, the hot summer weather in the greenhouse is more comfortable than almost anywhere else.

10. Stroll Like a Spa Gentleman

Are you spending your holiday at the local spa and looking for a beautiful place to promenade? Come to the botanical garden – a walk through the blooming exhibition will provide just the right atmosphere, and as a reward, you can enjoy a delicious cake and coffee in the local confectionery.
