Teplice Marasmius – a tropical fungus described based on a discovery in a greenhouse

In 1993, the tropical fungus Teplice Marasmius (Marasmius teplicensis) was described based on a discovery made in 1989. The mushroom grew on the roots of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera), as well as on a substrate composed of a mixture of bark, sphagnum moss, and soil. The extensive renovation of the Teplice greenhouses did not harm the mushroom, and its presence was also confirmed in the new tropical greenhouse. It can be seen year-round, but it does not tolerate the application of fertilizers, which causes the fruiting bodies to temporarily disappear. The Teplice Botanical Garden is thus the type locality for Marasmius teplicensis, and the herbarium specimen (the so-called holotype) is housed in the herbarium of the Moravian Museum in Brno.
